Democracy

The German Marshall Fund (GMF) is guided by four core values.

Democracy Affirming

GMF affirms and seeks to further fundamental democratic principles, including individual and opposition rights, the rule of law, representative government, transparent and accountable institutions, free and fair elections, protections for marginalized communities, and freedoms of expression, religion, and the media. These values are reflected in all of GMF’s efforts to build, defend, and deliver democracy in the United States, Europe, and worldwide.

Organizational Culture

GMF fosters an environment that embraces diverse voices and perspectives, open discussion, and the international exchange of ideas. The organization is committed to approaches that recognize and appreciate the contributions of all staff and partners. GMF believes that diversity is essential to advancing its mission and strengthening its workplace and that the institution should reflect the international community it serves.

Integrity and Intellectual Independence

GMF upholds the highest standards of integrity, professional conduct, intellectual independence, and objective, fact-based analysis. The organization demands intellectual rigor from both its staff and partners and holds itself accountable to its institutional values as well as its human and fiscal resources.

Measurable Impact

GMF strives to achieve its mission by rigorously evaluating the impact of its efforts across policy and programmatic work, civil society engagement, and thought leadership. Assessing impact is central to every GMF event, convening, or product from inception to execution.
